For quarterly VAT filers in the Netherlands, April, July, October and January are the standard VAT months in which the VAT return for the previous quarter is prepared and submitted. During these periods it is important that your administration is complete and up to date, so that we can review your records and file an accurate VAT return on time.
VAT return periods and timely submission
In each VAT month, our team prepares your VAT return and finalises the administration for the preceding quarter. A smooth, timely filing depends on receiving the required information as early as possible.
We therefore ask all clients to review their administration at the start of each VAT month and upload any missing items without delay. This includes:
- purchase invoices
- sales invoices
- receipts
- credit card statements
- bank statements
The sooner your administration is complete, the sooner we can carry out our checks and complete your quarterly VAT return.
Why complete administration matters
A complete administration is the basis for an accurate VAT return. Missing purchase invoices in particular can directly affect your final VAT position, because input VAT can only be reclaimed when the supporting documentation is available. Submitting documents late can therefore result in a higher amount of VAT payable, or a delay in recovering VAT.
By providing all required information on time, you help us ensure an efficient quarterly closing and reduce the risk of corrections or delays.
Important deadline: after the 20th moves to the next VAT period
Please note that any information received after the 20th of the VAT month can no longer be included in that VAT return. Documents submitted after this deadline will be processed in the following VAT period instead.
This means that any missing invoices or other financial documents received too late may affect the timing of the VAT settlement or recovery. Timely submission is therefore not only important for compliance, but also for maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial reporting.

Looking ahead: your half-year review (about 45 minutes)
The VAT month also marks the situation of your company — an ideal moment to step back and look at the bigger picture. Alongside your VAT return, we invite you to a personal Looking ahead: your half-year review (about 45 minutes). Together we go through your figures: what stands out, what is going well, and what is still missing.
A short conversation gives you more than you might expect:
- Insight: a clear overview of how your business is performing halfway through the year, and which points deserve attention.
- Complete & up to date: together we identify what is still missing — such as invoices or unmatched bank transactions — so your administration is complete and current.
- Forward: you leave with proactive advice and concrete next steps, so you stay on course towards year-end.
The quieter summer months are the perfect time to bring your administration fully up to date. What we complete together now does not have to be done under pressure during the year-end work — that brings peace of mind and makes your annual accounts and tax advice much smoother at the end of the year.
The review is without obligation and takes around 45 minutes. You choose what suits you best: a meeting at one of our offices in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Eindhoven or Utrecht, or a video call from your own workplace. You can schedule your half-year review online or simply contact your usual adviser.
